Walking Weights
|
Walking is a very beneficial exercise that most people can do to improve their health. While some people are content with taking a leisurely walk, others like to take walking up a level by adding some resistance. Walking weights are one way to add resistance to a regular walking exercise routine. There are various types of walking weights. Some walking weights can be worn on your hands or wrists. When used while swinging your arms when walking, they can give you an increased aerobic workout and do some arm toning. There is an increased risk of injuring your shoulder, neck, elbows or wrists while wearing them so they should be very light (around 1 pound each) and used only on short walks.

There are also vests that are used as walking weights. They are worn under your jacket and add more weight to your torso giving you a greater aerobic workout. They are usually available in 15, 30 or 40 pounds. Some have weights that you can adjust by removing or adding pieces. They are generally safe to use as long as you are not adding more weight than you are capable of handling.
Walking weights also come in ankle styles. Ankle weights help you burn more calories; however, they can increase the risk of injury. Some experts recommend that instead of wearing ankle weights you simply walk a few extra minutes to burn the same number of calories. If you do choose ankle weights, choose light weight ones, up to 2 pounds per ankle.
