The main thing to remember about your running breathing is the rhythm. You need to continue your inhaling and exhaling at a consistent rate. Regardless of how fast you are running, this must be done. When running, you should also be able to hold a conversation without getting out of breath.
When you get tired while running or as you pick up the pace, you will find that your breathing might get off rhythm and you are breathing too hard. At this point, you don't want to worry about how fast your breathing is, you simply want to try to control the rhythm of your running breathing.
For you to control your running breathing, you have to understand that the diaphragm is what controls your breathing and you have to control the diaphragm. If you don't, it is possible to get pains in your side, also known as a side-stitch. To stop this pain, you want to hold your hands above your head, while walking and taking deep breaths.
The fact is each individual will develop their own rhythm of running breathing. This is learned and over time, each individual will be able to control the diaphragm and allow a smooth, steady breathing rhythm while they run. |
