Facts About Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is one portion of what is known as a compound called Vitamin B complex. One of its primary ingredients is cobalt, which can also be termed cobalamin.
Vitamin B 12 has as its primary sources dairy, meat, and eggs. Vitamin B12 is necessary to synthesize our red blood cells, in maintaining healthy nervous system function, and in children's development and growth. Vitamin B12 is also known to increase energy and provide stamina in its system support of the Adrenal glands. A further benefit of Vitamin B12 is that it reduces cholesterol and it will dilate blood vessels for healthy cardiovascular function.

The primary function of Vitamin B12 is to form the red blood cells, and in maintaining neurological health. Vitamin B12 is critical for cell division in the synthesis of DNA. This is most important in cellular tissue when cells divide at a very rapid rate, such as bone marrow tissue where red blood cells are formed. Vitamin B12 is also important for healthy neurological function. Our nerves are surrounded by a covering called a fatty sheath that insulates them, and this is composed of a substance called myelin. Vitamin B12 metabolizes the fatty acids necessary for myelin maintenance. When there is deficiency of Vitamin B12, nerve degeneration occurs and there may be nervous system damage beyond repair.

Recommended intakes for Vitamin B12 are termed Reference Nutrient Intakes or RNI, and are denoted in ug/day where 1000 ug is equal to 1 mg. RNI varies according to age: 0-6 months RNI is 0.3 ug, 7-12 months RNI is 0.4 ug, 1-3 years RNI is 0.5 ug, 4-6 years RNI is 0.8 ug, 7-10 years is 1.0 ug, 11-14 years is 1.2 ug, 15 years and above is 1.5 ug, and for breastfeeding women is 2.0 ug. It is important to note that these are only guidelines or reference points. Vitamin B12 has a very low toxicity factor, and higher intakes are not considered dangerous.
