Vitamin Deficiency More Common That Thought

Recent research reported has indicated that as much as 64% of women that are postmenopausal are not getting enough Vitamin D.
In fact, they are suffering a serious vitamin deficiency of this critical vitamin. Researchers studied 2,600 women that were menopausal and suffering from osteoporosis worldwide. Their study indicated that in countries considered to be non-equatorial, the rate of osteoporosis was a staggering 90%. Researchers already know that vitamin deficiency of Vitamin D is a known contributor to this disease, so these findings are troublesome. Results are indicating that more education to post menopausal women is critical for the maintenance of healthy bones. Results from this study suggest that a combination of lack of education and insufficient amounts of Vitamin D are significant predictors of this vitamin deficiency.

A vitamin deficiency of Vitamin D is also being linked through other research to obesity, depression, diabetes, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. Our body manufactures Vitamin D when it is exposed to the ultraviolet rays from sunlight. Even though supplementation can increase Vitamin D levels, the most comprehensive method for combating this vitamin deficiency is spending as little as ten or fifteen minutes in the sun every day. However, even when this vitamin is readily available through exposure to the sun, osteoporosis, prostate cancer, and breast cancer remain to be treated through the use of prescription medications.

Unfortunately, the body's capacity to produce Vitamin D decreases as we get older, so post menopausal women are even at a higher risk for developing this vitamin deficiency. Further, even people that are intaking the required amounts have been found to have this vitamin deficiency. This is suggesting that the recommended allowances are simply not enough. This particular vitamin deficiency is so easily treated, but the deficiency itself is even more common than it needs to be.
