Magnesium Vitamins Provide Many Benefits

Not many people say too much about magnesium, but research is starting to show that magnesium may be useful in the treatment and prevention of heart disease.
Some clinical trials are indicating that there is a lower risk of death from heart attack in locations that drink hard water which is known to have high amounts of magnesium. Magnesium is also known to decrease blood pressure and assists in heart attack recovery by making arteries wider and preventing blood from clotting.

Magnesium is known to be a natural muscle relaxant, and thus magnesium vitamins are beneficial when it comes to sports injuries and in diseases like fibromyalgia. Magnesium vitamins are also useful for easing pre-menstrual syndrome and menstrual cramping, and they may even improve the density of bones in women who are post-menopausal. This benefit may even prevent osteoporosis. Not many studies have provided conclusive results on its use in the treatment of migraines, however one trial reports that magnesium vitamins may enhance the effects of sumatriptan which is a drug used for migraine treatment.

The current recommendation for magnesium is 350 mg daily for men, and 280mg daily for women. If you wish to take magnesium vitamins for the prevention of certain diseases, higher doses will be required. For heart disease prevention, 400 mg a day is the recommendation, 500 mg daily for treatment of high blood pressure, and an additional 150 mg of magnesium vitamins are recommended if you are treating fibromyalgia. Also, women that are taking oral contraceptives will require more magnesium vitamins. Magnesium vitamins are absorbed the most efficiently when they are taken with food.

Toxicity is not a large concern when it comes to magnesium vitamins as the kidneys work very well at ridding our body of excess amounts. Symptoms of too much magnesium intake are diarrhea and nausea. Other symptoms to look for in terms of toxicity are shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, weakness of muscles, confusion, and lethargy.
