Are Organic Vitamins Better for You?

When you are shopping for vitamin supplements, you will notice there are two main types available to you -- synthetic vitamins and organic vitamins.
The synthetic variety is made in a laboratory by processing the vitamin molecules at a chemical level. Organic vitamins on the other hand are created from specific food substrates like carrot powder, buckwheat, or wheat germ and their biochemical compounds are not tampered with. Many people are not sure what kind of vitamin to choose, and often their supplements are chosen randomly with the assumption that all supplements are created equal. Heavy care should be taken when choosing vitamins, particularly those that are synthetic. Large doses of synthetic vitamins can cause a number of problems especially if you have particular health issues such as kidney issues or diabetes.

The cells in our body need enough nutrients to live and to survive. Without adequate nourishment, the cells and tissues in our body will get sick and collapse. Even people who eat a healthy diet complete with vegetables and fruit are probably not getting enough minerals and vitamins every day. Synthetic vitamins can be harmful to the body as our body can not use synthetic compounds in the same way that it can use natural sources for tissue repair, immune system health, or to maintain cellular vitality. True organic vitamins work in concert with our body's natural sources to function in the body more effectively.

An example of a synthetic vitamin working against you is that of Vitamin C. Many producers of synthetic Vitamin C use ascorbic acid in its synthetic state to create the vitamin because it costs less and it will last much longer. However, even small doses of this synthetic version have been clinically found to trigger rebound scurvy, kidney stones, collagen disease, and defective metabolism. In another study, large doses of synthetic zinc resulted in signs of zinc deficiencies. In this case, the immune system health was negatively affected, rather than helped.

Ultimately organic vitamins are the most natural and most widely accepted by our body and how it uses vitamins. If you are able to, go the route of organic vitamins when you are supplementing your diet.
