Biotin and Vitamin B5 How they Work Together

As enzyme co-factors, Biotin and Vitamin B5 function in concert for many body processes. Without them, certain enzymes could not carry out their bodily functions.
It is not common to find deficiencies of these vitamins as they are available through the diet in many food sources. Intestinal bacteria are responsible for the production of Biotin, and many multivitamins and supplements include Vitamin B5 and Biotin in their compounds. Vitamin B5 and Biotin are used together to breakdown protein, carbohydrates, and fats from the diet for enzyme production. Biotin particularly assists our body in using glucose. We also need Vitamin B5 for healthy neurological function and in the production of stress hormones.

The benefits of Vitamin B5 and Biotin are great. Biotin and Vitamin B5 deficiencies are associated with hair loss as well as brittle and weak fingernails. Research also indicates that stress hormones are produced in excess when the body experiences extended periods of depressed or anxious states, and the body then requires more Vitamin B5 to produce these stress hormones. Vitamin B5 has also been proven useful for chronic fatigue and migraine headaches. Other benefits are that it helps with heartburn relief and also decreases symptoms in allergy sufferers.

The current recommendation for Vitamin B5 is 4-7 mg a day, and 100 mcg of biotin. This is more than enough to ensure adequate functioning. Vitamin B5 and Biotin are both found in enough food sources that often supplementation is not required. If you eat a lot of processed food however, you should consider taking supplements as these vitamins are destroyed in the processing of foods.
