The Importance of Iron Vitamins

One of the most common deficiencies in our country today is iron. Many Americans do not even realize that not getting enough of this mineral causes weakness, inability to concentrate, and susceptibility to infections.
Conversely, having too much in your system can be extremely dangerous as well. It is very easy to determine either a deficiency or toxicity of this mineral through simple blood work.
Iron is a critical component of hemoglobin and is needed through the entire body. It is integral to supplying the muscles with oxygen, and is a portion of several immunity complexes. Our body is fairly smart though in that it maintains its own iron quotient and will absorb more iron when there is a high demand for it, and it will absorb less when it has enough stores of iron.
Because of its role in oxygenating muscles, iron provides fuel for each cell in our body. Yet due to inadequate nutrition it is still the most common deficiency in this country. Initially your body will use your own iron stores if you are not getting enough, however once those stores are used, your body will no longer be able to provide a healthy amount of red blood cells. Signs of deficiency include short attention span, weakness, overall fatigue, paleness, shortness of breath, and feeling cold more often and sooner than others. You will also be more prone to infection than the average person.
The amount recommended for men of any age and for women over 50 is 10 mg daily. Younger women require 15 mg a day, and pregnant women require 30 mg. If anemia occurs, additional amounts will be required, and will be required for several months to build up the iron stores in the body.
