What is an acupuncture treatment like?
Acupuncture is perhaps one of the most interesting medical technique from the East. Not only because it uses the bodies own energy to encourage healing but also because of the unique use of thin steel needles to cure a patient.
These needles are inserted at certain points of the body to either unlock the self-healing energy or to encourage it to flow. These points are located along specific path on the body called meridians. The needles inserted into the skin will be manipulated slowly to calm or stimulate the meridians. Normally disposable, the needles are made of stainless steel and come in sterilized pack. It is normal for 5 needles to be used but the number may be increased up to 15. These needles will either be left for 30 minutes or removed quickly, depending on situation. The depth to which the needles are inserted vary from just below the skin to up to 12 mm.
An acupuncture treatment will start by a series of questions asked by the acupuncturists. Apart from that, the acupuncturists will also observe other characteristics such as the patient’s skin color, voice, posture and tongue. During the first consultation (which normally lasted for an hour), an acupuncturist will also take pulse reading from both wrists.
Will it hurt?
Hurt? No. Tingling sensation, yes.
It is reported that if the correct point is addressed, the patient will experience a certain degree of uneasiness or feeling a bit uncomfortable.
Tell me about the recovery afterward A patient’s health condition will normally improve after 4 to 6 acupuncture sessions. However, if the disease is a long one, the effect will be gradual. After the sessions, some people feel tired. Others elated. The effect therefore, could be said to vary from one person to another. At the end of the treatment, your acupuncturists may also recommend Chinese herbal alongside the treatment. It is also common for a patient to be advised about changing his dietary habit or life style.
If a patient does not feel any changes or feel worse after the treatment, it may be caused by overstimulated energies in the body. Don't worry, your acupuncturists will be able to rectify the problem by simply reducing the number of needles used in the following sessions.
Sadly, for some people, no changes are felt even after 6-8 sessions. If this the case, then it is doubtful that acupuncture will be able to offer relief from the ailment.
