Acupuncture Information Before Treatment
Many people are seduced with the promise of cure via acupuncture and started to spend a lot of money in the treatment, sometimes without any improvement to their well being. Little that they know, because of the huge demands for acupuncture many unethical doctors have started to add acupuncture into their area of expertise, some without a clue of what they are doing.
Check the credibility
Nowadays, there are many people who claim that they could perform acupuncture. Unfortunately only a handful of these acupuncturists use techniques that are genuinely consistent with what's practiced in China. In his book Health and Healing, Dr. Andrew Weil criticized doctors who are practicing this.
He said :
" Many are unskilled in correct identification of the points, and some use bizarre placements of needles and such gimmicks as electrical stimulation through them. I met one elderly obstetrician in Oregon
who packed his waiting room by offering acupuncture to old patients with rheumatism and arthritis. While I watched him at work, connecting needles to an array of wires and lights, he told me he did not think it was all important where he put them. "Sometimes I just stick them right into the joint," he said, "and it doesn't seem to make any difference".
Unfortunately, cases like this is common. Check with credible association like British Medical Acupuncture Society to ask for practical advise as to whom you should get a treatment from.
Pulse checking is vital
Many people who consider themselves acupuncturists did not practice pulse diagnosis. This pulse diagnoses is normally done before an acupuncture session to assess patients condition. If your acupuncturists did not do it, it may mean he is not a qualified or properly trained.
Beware of the needles
Disease like HIV and hepatitis can be transferred using used or unsterilized needles. The needles used by your acupuncturists must either be disposable or sterilized using a special machine (autoclave). Using boiling water to kill bacteria from used needles IS NOT an effective way to combat above-mentioned diseases.
Inform your acupuncturists
When receiving acupuncture treatment, be sure to inform your acupuncturist if you are receiving or using orthodox drug treatments. When you are taking other medication, the tongue and pulse diagnosis by the acupuncturist will be unreliable.
Don't forget to inform your acupuncturist if you are pregnant. Certain points should not be stimulated during this time.
For people with sexually transmitted disease, HIV, AIDS or hepatitis it is an obligation for you to also inform the acupuncturists.
