This is due to the fact that your body is making much more blood to provide support to the little one growing inside you. Consequently, your iron stores may thin out and you will need to take prenatal vitamins that are fortified with iron. The recommended amount is currently 27 mg which is 50% more than you need when you are not pregnant. Most prenatal vitamins will contain this amount, but you can purchase it separately if yours does not.

Every pregnant woman should be taking prenatal vitamins regardless of how healthy you are. You should think of it like additional insurance for both you and your baby's overall health.
