The Basic of Alexander Technique
Alexander Technique is a way to bring back our natural poise. Something that we have when we were small and young but lose when we get older, due to our laziness and bad habits. The aim of Alexander technique is to re-learn our natural poise. Look at small children and see their natural move. That is natural poise.
In Alexander Technique, there are three primary things you must remember.
- Think of freeing the neck
- Allow the head go up and forward
- Let the back lengthen and widen.
Remember these in your everyday movement.
Sitting and Standing
Correct Way – Think of the shoulder as going away from each other. Feet must be firmly planted on the floor with sufficient width apart (normally hip width).
Do not - fold or wrap your feet. Don’t arch the back and do not lean.
Lifting
Correct way - Stand near the load and maintain the alignment of the head, back and neck. Bend your arms so that the elbows are close to the body. Use your feet to lift the load. Of course, if it’s too heavy, ask others to help
Do not – jar or suddenly pull against your back. Also avoid using your back to lift the item.
Carrying
When carrying something (like your shopping items), use both hands. If you use only one hand, it will imbalance the body because your body will be pulled to the side that carries the bag. Distribute the items as evenly as possible to both hands. It will makes it easy for you to walk.
When carrying your baby, hold him or her close to your body.
