Yoga - The Practise

Yoga exercise comprises of asanas, or postures that involves bending, stretching, turning and relaxation. Each of these postures has a specific purpose. There are six main groups of yoga postures – standing, inverted, twist, back bend, forward bend and side bend. Some of the movement and position in Yoga was invented from the observation of animal because it appeared to be using minimum effort. The postures in Yoga would give these specific benefits: -

Standing – to improve effectiveness the whole body
Inverted – balances endocrine system and metabolism. Enhances thinking ability
Twisting – ease back pain, helps digestion
Back bends – encourages deep breathing
Forward bend – offer calmness, improves blood flow
Side bends – stimulates main organ such as liver, kidney and stomach

There are five different branches of yoga: raja, jnana, karma and bakti and hatha. The last system, hatha is the most popular yoga in the west. It became popular after the media publicize the successful treatment of a famous violinist using Yoga.
