Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology reportedly eases a wide range of disease. In this article, we provide you with a small sample of trials conducted all over the world. These will illustrate the benefits of reflexology.

Premenstrual Symptoms (PMS)

A study published in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists reported that ear, hand and foot reflexology is effective in treating PMS.

In the study, 35 women who complained of PMS distress were randomly assigned to two groups. One group received reflexology treatment while the other underwent "fake" reflexology sessions.

The study reported that women who received 30-minute reflexology treatments from a trained therapist once a week for eight weeks reported significant decrease in premenstrual symptoms compared to the other group that was given "fake" reflexology sessions.

Headache and Migraine

Reflexology could ease migraine and headache. A study conducted by National Board of Health Council, Denmark (1995) put to test the effectiveness of reflexology on 220 patients whose primary health problem was headache. 78 reflexologists were assigned to these patients for over a three-month period. At the end of the three months, 16 percent of the patients reported that they were cured, 65 percent said that reflexology had helped, and 18 percent said that their condition remained unchanged.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Another benefit of reflexology may be in treating MS. In a study published in Hodder Arnold Journal, 71 MS patients were randomly assigned to two groups to see if reflexology could help MS patients.

One group received 11 weeks reflexology treatment while another received "fake" reflexology treatment. The study found that the improvement of patients in the reflexology group was significant compared to the one receiving "fake" sessions. After three months, these patients were once again examined and it was reported that the improvement "remained significant." The study concluded that reflexology treatment was beneficial in alleviating motor, sensory and urinary symptoms in MS patients.

Bedwetting

Studies have shown that reflexology may help if you or your children have trouble controlling the bladder while sleeping. A 1990 Australian study presents a good example. During the trial, 70 percent of patients who received a minimum of two reflexology sessions per week had either less urination in urine volume or less incidence of wetting. However, most patients said that the effect was only noticeable after the tenth session.

Men's Problems

A study reported by Bauneholm School of Reflexology in Denmark found that reflexology is beneficial for various prostate problems commonly suffered by older men. In the study, 46 patients received 13 foot reflexology treatments. The results showed that 30 participants (65 percent) experienced a reduction in their need to urinate, 31 patients (67 percent) experienced better bladder pressure, 37 (80 percent) experienced reduced sexual problems, and 28 of them (60 percent) experienced improvement of their general condition. However, the result is questionable because the study was conducted in a reflexology school.
