The Differences Between Reflexology and Massage

Reflexology and massage are similar in many respects, so much so that many of us cannot differentiate between the two. In this article, we highlight the distinctions between the two techniques.

(I)Reflexology
Reflexology normally touches only the feet, hands, and ears. Hence, only the footwear may need to be removed. If the practitioner asks you to disrobe, something is definitely wrong!

Massage
This involves touching most of the body. You would normally be asked to only wear your undergarment.

(II)Reflexology
Reflexology is applied on specific areas of the feet, hands or ears to affect an entirely different organ or body part.

Massage
When massage is applied on one part of the body, muscles and tissues directly underneath it will be stimulated. The entire body needs to be massaged to stimulate all parts of the body.

(III)Reflexology
Only the fingers are generally used. The muscle movement is lower compared to a massage. Some practitioners use oils, others do not.

Massage
There is heavy muscle movement. Some masseurs use not only their hands and fingers but also their feet, arms and elbows. Oil is normally used.

(IV)Reflexology
The aim is to actually improve the function of organs and glands.

Massage
The aim is to give general benefit to body. It is not generally used to heal or improve specific organs.
