Improving Health Through Reflexology

Reflexology is another name for the alternative therapy that most people know as zone therapy. It is a practice whereby pressure is applied to specific parts of the hands or feet. This pressure is said to cause a reaction in another part of the body. There is no lotion used during reflexology (as there often is with massage) and the part of the body touched is very rarely the part of the body that needs to be healed. It is hard to explain how this works and reflexologists struggle to give an explanation.

What Is Reflexology?

Reflexology has been described as a natural healing based therapy. Its basic idea is that there are reflexes in different parts of our body and their referral areas. These reflexes have a one-on-one correspondence with every part of the body". Reflexology is not a new practice and has been practiced all around the world with only the continent of South America not having a history of its use. As with many treatments it has a long history in China and it could be as much as 5000 years old. Reflexology has been performed in the United States since at least 1913. This is where the belief that pressure had an anesthetic effect on various parts of the body was formed.

The reasons that reflexology is believed to work is because there is an invisible energy field around all our bodies and when this field is blocked or damaged it is not possible to heal from any injuries or illness that occur. Some people also have the view that the feet have links to the rest of the body and by touching a certain area of one of them will bring about relief elsewhere in the body. The reason given for this is the idea that the pressure will work to balance the nervous system and there will be endorphins released that will help to fight the pain.

Does Reflexology Work?

Some medical professionals have concerns that reflexology is often used as an attempt to cure a disease rather than to seek medical help. There are concerns in the medical world that this is not possible and people may suffer unnecessarily if they just use reflexology so it will be best to always seek medical advice before or soon after trying this as a cure.

The main reason that people doubt the effectiveness of reflexology is that no-one has been able to prove there is a force -- or QI as it is often referred to as. The concern is that a temporary relief due to the release of endorphins may fool patients to belief the treatment actually works and is not just a placebo.

Who Uses Reflexology?

Often a patient who does not like taking medication or is afraid of being operated on will choose reflexology as a treatment instead. In some parts of the world there is a large proportion of the population who swear by its success. Surveys in Denmark have shown that over 21% of the population has been treated using reflexology at some time and around 7% of the population uses it each year.

The good news for fans of reflexology is that the industry is heavily regulated and while in some parts of the world this is on a voluntary basis there can be problems for reflexologists who do not agree to be regulated. Reflexologists who are regulated will undergo ongoing training and will also have agreed to take out a high level of liability insurance so you can feel relaxed in their hands.
