Explaining Massage Therapy and Its Precautions

Many people enjoy a massage just as a general way to relax and find relief from the general aches and pains that most people suffer from at some stages in their lives. There are plenty of places that will be able to provide this service and it is classed as an alternative form of treatment. Sometimes your doctor will recommend the use of massages, but with most injuries and problems it will be best to inform your GP if this form of treatment is being considered as there is always a risk that further damage could be caused, causing the treatment provided by your doctor to be set back.

Definition of Massage Therapy

When a massage takes place, the soft tissue of the body is manipulated in an attempt to reduce pain when there is normal movement taking place. It is not just the case that the body is manipulated but there are certain scientific movements that have to be made. During massage therapy, pressure will be placed on the body and this will either be in the form of moveable or fixed pressure. The patient may find that at times they need to move in a certain way and at other times keep very still.

Purpose of Massage Therapy

The major purpose of massage therapy is to stimulate the blood around the body and as a result this will encourage the tissues to heal. Massage therapy can help in a lot of ways and relieve a number of symptoms. It can lead to a reduction in stiffness and muscle tension and can help to prevent muscle spasms. Once there is less pain, it will be possible to move in a more active and normal way along with a greater ability to stay in one position without feeling a great deal of pain.

It may not be widely known but muscle therapy can also aid in relieving headaches and eyestrain. If you have an injury your body will not always heal itself to the way it was before the accident. A gentle scar tissue massage can enable you to be more mobile and it can also help to keep down excessive swelling.

There can even be an improvement in the texture and quality of the skin and an overall feeling of wellbeing. Some people believe that a massage can help them to be more intelligent or more alert, but it is more likely that it is the case that the person is just more able to concentrate as there is now less pain to distract them.

Medical Reasons for Massage Therapy

Research has shown that massage therapy can even help asthma suffers as the massage techniques help to open airways making it easier to breathe. Inflammatory bowel disease suffers have also noticed an improvement in their condition and studies also show that premature babies respond well to a massage. As with all complimentary therapies it is best to speak to a doctor about massage therapy treatment and not use it as a form of treatment before discussing it first.

Precautions to Take When Having a Massage

Most of the time it is perfectly safe to have a massage but there are times when precautions should be taken. If you have a history of high blood pressure, thrombosis or kidney failure then care should be taken. Massage therapy can actually encourage the growth of a cancerous tumor and damage skin weakened by chemotherapy so if you are in the recovery stages of cancer you are advised to consult your doctor before opting for this alternative treatment. The fear that your concentration may be affected for a period of time following the treatment is unfounded and there is no need to worry about not being fully alert afterwards.
