Alexander Technique Session

What happens in an Alexander Technique session? This article will give you some clues regarding what to expect should you enroll in an Alexander Technique class.

Your First Session

Alexander Technique sessions are usually conducted on a one-on-one basis. Don't go expecting a large group of students as in a yoga class. A typical session will only include you and your teacher.

During the first session, the teacher will begin by asking you to lie flat on your back with a few books supporting your head. He will ask you to bend your knees, and then make a few adjustments to your position. This is the introductory lesson.

You are introduced to Alexander Technique by lying down because it is believed that the body is most relaxed in this position. When you are mentally relaxed, even a small adjustment by the teacher could have a major impact on the body.

Soon after, you will be asked to sit or stand. During this time the teacher will make a few more adjustments to your posture and will re-educate you on using your body properly. You will be taught to use your muscles with the smallest effort or strain possible. The lesson will include learning how to sit or stand correctly.

What Happens After That First Session?

After you have learnt the basics of Alexander Technique, your teacher will concentrate on improving your movements while walking or going about your daily activities. You will be taught to do your regular work without straining your muscles or damaging your posture.

A typical Alexander Technique class is about 30 to 45 minutes long. Your course should consist of 15 to 30 classes. If you are quick and a devoted learner, you may not need as many classes. It will all depend on your learning capabilities.
