The Basics of Alexander Technique

Alexander Technique is a method that brings back our natural poise. We all have good posture at a young age, but lose it as we get older due to laziness and bad habits. Alexander Technique helps us re-learn our natural poise. Study the movements of young children, and you will notice what you have lost.

While performing Alexander Technique, remember three primary things:
  • Free your neck
  • Allow the head go up and forward
  • Let the back lengthen and widen
Remember these factors while moving around each day.

Sitting and Standing

Correct Way
Think of the shoulders as moving away from each other. Plant your feet firmly on the floor with sufficient width apart (normally hip width). Do not fold or wrap your feet. Do not arch your back and avoid leaning.

Lifting

Correct Way
Stand near the load and maintain the alignment of the head, back and neck. Bend your arms so that the elbows are close to the body. Use your feet to lift the load. If the load is too heavy, ask others to help. Do not jar or suddenly pull against your back. Also avoid using your back to lift the item.

Carrying

When carrying something (like groceries and shopping bags), use both hands. If you use only one hand, it will imbalance the body as the body will be pulled to the side that carries the bag. Distribute the items as evenly as possible across both hands. This will make it easier for you to walk. When carrying a baby, hold him or her close to your body.
