What Is an Acupuncture Treatment Like? These needles are inserted at specific points of the body to either unlock the self-healing energy or encourage it to flow. These points are located along specific paths along the body called meridians. Following insertion into the skin, the needles are manipulated slowly to calm or stimulate the meridians. Disposable sterilized stainless steel needles are generally used. It is normal for five needles to be used at a single session, but sometimes the number may rise to 15. The needles may remain inserted for 30 minutes or removed quickly, depending on the situation The needles may be inserted just below the skin or up to depths of 12 mm. An acupuncturist will begin the treatment by asking a series of questions. S/he will also observe other characteristics such as the patient's skin color, voice, posture and tongue. During the first consultation (which normally lasts for an hour), the acupuncturist will also take pulse readings from both wrists before beginning the insertion process. Will it hurt? Hurt? No. But you may experience a tingling sensation. It is reported that if the correct point is addressed, the patient experiences some uneasiness or discomfort. Tell me about the recovery afterward. A patient's health will usually improve after four to six acupuncture sessions. If the disease is a prolonged one, the effects may be gradual. Some people feel tired after a session while others feel elated. The effects may vary from person to person. At the end of the treatment, your acupuncturist may also recommend using Chinese herbal therapy. Patients are commonly advised to change their dietary habits and lifestyle. If a patient does not feel any improvements or feels worse after the treatment, it may be due to over-stimulated energies in the body. Do not worry; your acupuncturist will be able to rectify the problem by simply reducing the number of needles used in the following sessions. Sadly, some people see no improvement even after six or eight sessions. If this is the case, it is unlikely that acupuncture can treat your ailment. Also Read:
