Acupuncture Benefits
After the golden age of traditional Chinese medicine ended, the practice of acupuncture went into significant decline. It became entwined with superstitious and magical practices, and lost touch with the pure and powerful philosophy behind it. When the Chinese government began to acknowledge and encourage traditional Chinese medicine, the practice began to gain public acceptance and attracted research into its benefits.
WHO Recognition
World Health Organization (WHO) has listed certain illnesses that could benefit from acupuncture. The organization stated that acupuncture is proven effective in relieving post-operative pain, nausea during pregnancy, nausea and vomiting resulting from chemotherapy, and dental pain with extremely low side effects. It can also alleviate anxiety, panic disorders and insomnia.
In China
Acupuncture is widely used as a form of anesthesia where the effectiveness is said to be around 90 percent. It has been successfully used during childbirth, dentistry and surgery.
Acupuncture Benefit for Pregnancy
In Journal of Royal Society of Medicine 1989, research confirmed that stimulation of acupuncture points 5 centimeters above the crease of the waist relieved and even eliminated nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy.
Back Pain
If you suffer from back pain, acupuncture may offer some benefits. In a 1989 Swedish study, researchers showed that acupuncture eased post-surgical pain. American studies in the 1980s revealed that acupuncture relieved neck and lower back pain among patients.
Arthritis Pain
Numerous studies have shown that acupuncture is effective in relieving arthritis pain. One of the studies was published in the December 21, 2004, issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), the study concluded that acupuncture provides pain relief and improves function for people with osteoarthritis of the knee while serving as an effective complement to standard care.
Stroke Attack
Stroke patients can also benefit from acupuncture, especially if the treatment begins within 40 days of the attack. Researchers from the Suunaas Rehabilitation Hospital in Norway made the discovery after placing 45 stroke patients, with an average age of 57, into either a control group or an acupuncture treated group. The acupuncture group was given acupuncture thrice to four times a week for six weeks. The study found that improvement was far greater in the acupuncture group than in the control group.
