Acupuncture As a Treatment

Some people will be afraid to try any form of therapy that they are not fully aware of and as a result will miss out on the chance to get a lot of relief from the pain they are in. With acupuncture there is the added problem as some are afraid of needles and the idea of dozens of them at a time is more than they can bear. There are some alternative medications that can be tried at home, but this will not be one of them. Before acupuncture is carried out there needs to be full training undertaken. There may be some people practicing who are not qualified and they will best avoided.

What Is Acupuncture?

This is classed as an alternative medicine and while practitioners will be highly trained they may not have the same level of training as a doctor. The history of acupuncture can be traced back to the Far East and China in particular and it is from this background that many Western practitioners take their lead although often without the backup of herbal remedies. Needles are placed in various locations on the body in an attempt to relieve pain. Each part of the body should have a point that will react when a needle is inserted.

What Can Acupuncture Cure?

Most people will know that acupuncture is considered to cure or at least relieve pain, but there are also claims that it can help with things such as infertility, can cure or at least treat disease and have an overall good influence on general health. There is little evidence however that there is any other benefit for anything other than pain relief and while there will often be no harm having acupuncture for illness and disease medical advice and treatment will be needed for more serious problems.

Even within pain relief there are various levels of cure and it is really with neck pain that there are good results. Nausea has also been cured so there does seem to be documented proof that there is a place for acupuncture for some symptoms if not all.

Pros and Cons of Acupuncture in the United States

There are a great many people benefiting from the use of acupuncture in the United States. There are upward of 3 million people using this form of pain relief and there will be the argument that if it does not work patients will not carry on with the treatment if they do not believe there is a benefit.

There can be a few problems if the practitioner is not properly qualified and using a good clean surgery. There have not been many complaints made to the Food and Drug Administration but the ones that have been made are often about complications arising from dirty needles. Each patient should have their own needles and while the process is ongoing, the area should be well cleaned with alcohol.

Choosing a Responsible Practitioner

Before starting treatment the practitioner should make sure that they have a full account of the problems to be treated and also any other health issues. They should explain to you what is going to happen and due to the fear many people have about needles, let them know that they will not hurt. If there is anything more than a slight prick when the needle is inserted it will be best to let the acupuncturist know.

Acupuncture Treatment Costs

Not all insurance policies will cover the use of acupuncture so it will be best to check if there is cover and also get an idea of how long the treatment will last. If there is no cover, then it can be an expensive form of treatment to undergo.
