Colds Home Remedy

We spend billions annually to combat headache, sore throat, a stuffy nose and other cold-related effects. Yet, there is simply no cure for the common cold. We have to depend on our body's natural defense. The steps outlined here are simple things that you can do to speed up healing and feel more comfortable

What Should You Do?

Chicken Soup for the Cold

When talking about colds, mom was right. Doctors believe that drinking hot liquid eases cold symptoms. Research proves that hot chicken soup is extremely beneficial.

In a study of ways to clear up nasal mucus, doctors at Miami's Mount Sinai Medical Center found that chicken soup is more effective than hot or cold water. Listen to your mom, drink the soup; it is what the doctor ordered!

Have a Cold? Go and Rest

Yes, extra rest will help. Keep yourself warm, and head for bed.

Reduce Sore Throat

Gargling with warm (not hot!) salt water every hour or two helps soothe a sore throat. A mixture of equal amounts of honey and ginger juice works as a good expectorant and aids healing.

How Do You Unblock the Nose?

Fill a clean nasal spray bottle with diluted salt water and spray each nostril thrice or four times. Repeat five to six times a day. You can also use eucalyptus, pine needle, clove and thyme for inhalation purposes. Place eucalyptus leaves (or oil), pine needles (or oil), cloves and thyme in one liter of just-boiled water. Cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam.

Water Will Help

A hot mustard foot bath reduces congestion in the head and sinuses.

For the body, try hot Epsom salt baths plus sweating teas. Take 500 g to 1 kg of Epsom salts and dissolve in a hot tub. While soaking, drink two to three cups of hot pleurisy root tea. Get to bed right after the bath and cover with blankets. The aim is to sweat profusely.
