Home Remedies for Curing a Sore Throat
Sore throat is a common affliction around the world. It is usually a symptom of an underlying medical condition or illness such as strep throat, laryngitis, pharyngitis or other viral and bacterial infections, the flu or the common cold, too much shouting or talking and excessive coughing.
Generally, sore throats get better by themselves. You may be prescribed an antibiotic if your sore throat is due to a bacterial infection. You can try some home remedies at home while waiting for the condition to improve.
Home Remedies
- Ensure that your nasal passages are always clear. People with blocked nasal passages tend to breathe through their mouths, which may lead to sore throat or aggravation of a sore throat. Decongest your nasal passages by dropping some saline solution or using a saline nasal spray in your nostrils.
- Gargle using herbs and natural products. Try gargling with raspberry tea. Pour a cup of boiling water over two teaspoons of dried raspberry leaves. Steep this for 10 minutes before straining. Allow it to cool before using it as a mouthwash to relieve the pain and irritation in your throat. You can also drink raspberry tea to reduce fever. Other effective herbs for gargling include sage and turmeric.
- Apple cider vinegar is known for its antibacterial properties. That is why it is recommended for speeding up the healing process of a sore throat. Combine a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with honey (which is known for its soothing properties) and eight to 10 ounces of hot water. Sip this slowly to soothe the throat and get rid of the infection-causing bacteria. You can also use apple cider vinegar for gargling. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in half a cup of apple cider vinegar and mix in a cup of warm water. Gargle using this solution every 15 minutes.
- Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those that are rich in Vitamin C, to strengthen immunity. You can eat them raw in salads or drink as juices. Do not add sugar to fresh fruit juices as this may worsen your sore throat.
