Effective Home Remedies for Laryngitis
Laryngitis is a condition where the larynx or voice box gets inflamed due to a viral or bacterial infection. Laryngitis may be caused by other medical conditions that need to be diagnosed by your doctor.
Some symptoms of laryngitis include a raspy or hoarse voice, fever, colds and cough. Depending on the cause of your laryngitis, you may be prescribed with antibiotics (if it is a bacterial infection) or bed rest for a few days (if it is a viral infection). You can also use tried-and-tested home remedies to get better faster.
Home Remedies
- When you have laryngitis, avoid drinking beverages that contain caffeine. This includes colas, tea and coffee. Caffeine dehydrates the body, and hence, prolongs the duration of the infection. Steer clear of alcoholic drinks for the same reason.
- Stop smoking, or at least, limit yourself if you cannot completely abstain. Smoking is one of the primary causes of laryngitis. If your throat is already inflamed, smoking may worsen your condition, leading to complications and a longer healing process.
- The antibacterial properties of salt are recommended for treating laryngitis. Prepare a saltwater gargle by adding half a teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water. Gargle with this solution several times throughout the day as needed. This relieves pain and speeds up healing of infected vocal cords.
- Use vinegar as a gargle to eliminate the cause of your laryngitis. Since most viruses and bacteria cannot thrive in an acidic environment, gargling with vinegar and water thrice or four times a day helps eradicate the causal agents.
- Lemon has been used to treat sore throat over many centuries. Like vinegar, lemon is acidic. It stimulates the flow of saliva and alleviates the symptoms of laryngitis. Drink hot tea with lemon, suck on some natural lemon lozenges or gargle with a lemon and water rinse to see quick benefits.
- Garlic and ginger also speed up healing of an inflamed throat. Both these ingredients have antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that help kill the bacteria causing the infection. Sucking on a garlic clove or a piece of ginger offers relief.
