Home Remedy for Headache

We all have headaches. It is one of the commonest afflictions. Headaches vary considerably in type and severity. You could have a hard-day-at-work headache or a let-me-bang-my-head-on-the-wall type. An aspirin usually eases the pain.

Visit a doctor in case of repeated headaches, if the headache is confined to one side of the face and if it causes weakness, changes in vision or numbness. A severe headache could indicate more serious medical disorders. For example, a glaucoma headache could lead to blindness if left untreated.

If you have only occasional headaches, read on. These home remedies may help.

Darkness an Ally

To alleviate the pain, rest in a dark room. Draw the curtains, turn off the lights and try to relax. If looking at bright things gives you a headache, invest in a pair of dark sunglass for outdoor use and wear tinted glasses when using a computer.

Try Ice

An ice compress at the base of your head could relieve your headache. You could also apply an ice pack on your forehead during a footbath. It is an effective way to abort a headache. Use these water therapies as soon as possible following the attack.

Reduce Caffeine, Alcohol

Some alcohols contain tyramine, a type of amino acid that causes headache. If you are prone to headaches or migraines, heavy drinking may aggravate it. Help yourself by reducing your alcohol intake.

Caffeine could also lead to headaches. Caffeine increases muscle tension, anxiety level and causes insomnia -- things that could bring on a headache later.

Interestingly, coffee is known to relieve chronic migraines. It constricts blood vessels, thereby easing the symptoms of migraine headaches.

Relax, Meditate

Most headaches are not really a health problem. They are largely caused by emotional issues like worry, anxiety, overwork or stress. If you lead a stressful life, learning to relax or meditate could help. You could benefit from a yoga class. Deep breathing could help you relax and stay calm.

Remember, almost 95 percent of people who seek medical help for headaches actually suffer from tension headaches -- one caused by emotion and stress, and not poor health.

Check Sleep Pattern

Tension headaches are often associated with poor sleep and persistent tension in the muscles of the neck, shoulders and forehead. Ensure that you go to bed and wake up at your regular time everyday. Changes in sleep pattern could be another cause of headaches.
