Is There an Effective Home Remedy for Eczema?
Many remedies can help decrease the intensity of an eczematous flare-up and address an individual's vulnerability to eczema. Note that eczema is not a disease but a tendency of the skin to have repeated inflammatory reactions on encountering various substances.
Frequently, there are no defined causes for an eczematic flare-up. An effective home remedy for eczema should be able to solve the problem in a holistic manner.
Home Remedies
- Aloe vera is a safe and effective treatment for eczema. Aloe vera is available in juice or gel forms. Aloe vera gel is recommended for topical application. If you are suffering from scalp-based eczema, rub the gel on to your scalp along with shampoo while washing your hair. You could also apply aloe vera a few hours before taking a bath. Aloe vera is effective because it is a very penetrative moisturizer. It seeps below the eczema patches and moisturizes inside-out, reducing redness and preventing future flare-ups. The gel also reduces itchiness, since moisturized skin is less itchy. This is useful because repeated scratching of the skin induces many eczema attacks.
- Dilute chopped sandalwood with water to form a thick paste. Sandalwood paste has amazing healing properties that become evident when the paste is applied on irritated skin. Sandalwood paste reduces inflammation and normalizes the skin within hours. Adding nutmeg makes the sandalwood pack even more effective. Nutmeg desensitizes the skin for some time. This reduces itchiness at the eczema sites while the sandalwood treats the inflamed tissues. Avoid nutmeg if you are allergic. Try camphor instead.
- Muskmelon is available for only a few months in the year. The fruit is very effective in treating irritated skin conditions. Muskmelon acts internally by reducing our vulnerability to skin diseases. This effect is noticed on daily consumption of muskmelon juice.
