Identifying Effective Home Remedy for Dry Cough
It is difficult to diagnose dry cough or irritant cough. The condition tends to worsen at night. The initial absence of phlegm makes it difficult to decode the nature of the cough. Dry coughing bouts are often violent and spasmodic; they occur suddenly and subside on their own.
One of the easiest ways to tide over a bout of dry coughing is drinking lukewarm water. However, this is hardly a remedy. Some of the more effective remedies for treating dry cough at home are discussed below.
Home Remedies
- Combine onion juice, honey and lemon juice. Do not dilute the mixture. This is an effective home remedy for dry cough. The syrup coats the throat and addresses the feeling of "something being stuck" in the throat. Consume this syrup before going to bed.
- The juice of raw ginger is very effective in overcoming a sudden bout of dry cough. Ginger tea is also effective but raw ginger offers the best results. This means chewing on a slice of raw ginger. However, the taste may be displeasing. Address the problem by soaking the ginger slices in honey and vinegar for an hour.
- Bay berry juice is an effective home remedy for cough. Bay berries are not your usual brightly colored berries. They retail more as herbal supplements rather than as fruit. The juice can ease even the most violent bouts of coughing as well as bronchitis-related coughing attacks.
- An excellent herbal tea preparation for treating dry cough is made from cloves and fenugreek. Cloves alleviate throat irritation while reducing inflammation that often spreads to the pharynx and causes nighttime coughing. Fenugreek seeds act as a decongestant, relieving the shortness of breath associated with extreme coughing. You could also use butea in place of these herbs, but availability is an issue.
