Home Remedy for Diaper Rash

It is red, itchy and not a pretty sight. Diaper rash is not really a medical problem; it is another of life's little discomforts. The good news is that this "little discomfort" can be cured within a short period. Some measures can help eliminate the problem forever.

The cures for diaper rash are similar to prevention measures. The following tips help cure the condition as well as prevent it in the future.

Diaper-less Baby

The best diaper is no diaper at all. Remove it whenever practical to ensure that your baby's skin does not come in contact with stool and urine. Of course, this is practical only when all else fails. Place your baby on a rubber mat covered with a washable cloth while airing his (or her) bottom to ensure minimum mess.

Internal Measures

Prolonged contact with a wet or dirty diaper is commonly believed to be the reason behind diaper rash. However, some researchers believe that the real problem is one of diet rather than hygiene. If your baby is breastfed, check if you have introduced new food to your diet. Excess Vitamin C, pineapples or oranges in a mother's diet could lead to the problem. If your baby takes formula milk, switch to goat milk. Wheat could also be a factor. Ensure that grains are introduced as the last food in the baby's weaning process.

Avoid These

Commercial baby wipes are among the biggest culprits causing diaper rash. Wipes mostly contain alcohol and other chemicals that may dry and irritate a baby's skin. Avoid these irritants by not using them in the first place. Instead, wipe your baby's bottom with a wet soapy cloth and rinse well.

Avoid plastic pants as these trap moisture when worn over a diaper. The excess moisture could cause irritation and lead to diaper rash.

Useful Ointments and Powder

Most doctors advise using diaper rash cream every time you change your baby's diaper. Dusting your baby's bottom with talcum powder may also help. Ensure that you shake talcum powder into your palm, well away from the baby's face. Inhaling talcum powder is very dangerous for babies.

Vinegar

Another useful regimen is to wash the diaper region with dilute vinegar (1 to 2 tbsp per liter of water). Repeat this at each diaper change. The idea is to neutralize or balance the ammonia from the baby's waste.

If All Fails

If you have waited for 5 days and tried all the above measures without success, head to the doctor's chamber. Left untreated, the rash can only worsen and make your baby miserable.
