Home Remedy for Colds

Despite all our advancements in the field of medical technology, we are yet to find a cure for the common cold.

An annual bout of the common cold is almost a given. However, before you run to your medicine cabinet to grab the nearest bottle of Tylenol or Advil, try some easy home remedies for colds to alleviate your symptoms. But do this only in mild cases. If you are running a temperature of 103 or 104 degrees, call your doctor. High fevers and severe symptoms could signal something far more serious.

Home Remedies

  • Stay in bed when you are sick. Getting plenty of rest will help the body fight off ailments. The body can then focus all its attention on helping the immune system combat the infection.

  • Give your immune system a further boost by drinking orange juice, apple juice or other drinks that are high in vitamins. This, coupled with adequate rest, will help you get better quicker.

  • Add hot drinks to the mix. These will open up your nasal passages and ease breathing. The heat will help suppress inflammation at the back of your throat or mouth.

  • It may not be possible to drop all your responsibilities during sickness. If you need to get some work done while stuck in bed with a cold, prop your head up higher than usual. Lean up against the backboard of your bed or add an extra cushion or pillow behind your head. Sitting up straight eases flow within the nasal passages, making you feel better, faster.
