Getting Rid of Age Spots: Some Home Remedies to Try
Age spots are visible marks or spots on the skin. They are black, brown or gray in color, can be as small as freckles or up to a centimeter in diameter. They may occur in clusters or in isolation.
Age spots are commonly caused by excessive sun exposure. They may appear on different parts of the body such as the face, hands, arms and shoulders. They are often seen in individuals over the age of 40, although they may appear in younger individuals who have had much exposure to the sun.
Consult a dermatologist to ascertain whether the spots on your skin are indeed age spots. You could then use prescribed medicated creams to improve your skin. If you prefer natural methods of eliminating age spots, try some home remedies.
Home Remedies
- Lemons are high in Vitamin C and have properties that help lighten skin naturally. The citric acid in lemons exfoliates dead skin cells and speeds up skin cell renewal, resulting in clearer and younger-looking skin. To use lemons as a home remedy for age spots, squeeze the juice of a lemon into a bowl, add three cups of boiled water and let it cool. Soak a washcloth in the solution and wring out the excess before pressing it on the areas of your skin that have age spots. Leave the cloth on the skin to allow absorption.
- Another good age spot home remedy involves rubbing castor oil on the age spots. Castor oil contains natural lightening ingredients that help eliminate age spots and other skin discolorations.
- Red onions are a recommended remedy for age spots because of their exfoliant properties. Cut an onion in half and rub over your age spots. The acids in the onion slough off hyper-pigmented and sun-damaged skin, revealing skin that is fairer and healthier.
- You can also try essential oils of benzoin and lemon combined with almond oil. Apply this mixture on the age spots with a cotton ball twice a day. The combination of benzoin, lemon and almond oils offers bleaching effects that can lighten spots and marks on the skin.
- Create a homemade bleaching mixture with honey and yogurt. Combine a teaspoon of plain yogurt with a teaspoon of honey. Apply the mixture on the age spots, allow it to dry for 30 minutes and then wash off.
