Home Remedies for Toothache That Work

The dentist's office is a scary place. Nobody likes the thought of sitting in the dentist's chair. However, if you have a severe and persisting toothache or swollen gums, you must conquer your fear and head there anyway. By avoiding the dentist, you will only be risking a more painful treatment in the future.

Toothaches are a common dental problem that is largely caused by dental cavities. Other causes for toothache may include gingivitis, cracked tooth, jaw point diseases and spasms in the teeth muscles. Whatever the cause, toothaches are excruciating. The condition can only worsen if left untreated.

It is sensible to set up an appointment with the dentist as soon as you experience a toothache. In the meanwhile, here are some helpful home remedies that can help you alleviate the pain.

Chewing Cloves

This is one of the most popular and effective home remedies for toothache. Place a clove directly over the aching area and chew slowly with your jaw closed tight. Do this for about half an hour so that the juice can take effect. Repeat several times a day, or whenever the ache is pronounced.

Turmeric Powder

This is an age-old remedy. Apply turmeric powder on the affected area and leave on for sometime.

Vanilla Extract

Apply drops of vanilla extract on the aching tooth.

Oregano Oil

This is another effective remedy. Apply warm oregano oil for good results.

Mouthwash

Listerine is a very good antiseptic. It helps keep your mouth free of infections.

Ice

Directly applying ice on the ache might aggravate it, especially if it is due to a cavity. However, you can wrap ice cubes in a small towel or cloth and place it on cheek, right over the toothache. Apply for 20 minutes to make the area numb and relieve pain.

Gargling

Salt water gargling is a very good pain reliever. Use slightly warm water for best results.

These easy home remedies will alleviate the pain until you can see the dentist. Remember, the key to preventing toothaches and other dental ailments is oral hygiene. Brush and floss your teeth after every meal and regularly use mouthwash. Most importantly, visit the dentist every six months to prevent any severe problems, and to nip budding ailments in the bud.
