How to Get Rid of Painful Kidney Stones: Home Remedies

Kidney stones are a very painful condition that affects adults. Kidney stones are formed when chemicals crystallize in urine.

They start out as small stones but can grow to up to a tenth of an inch, and sometimes, even larger. These stones rarely cause problems when they sit in the kidneys. They usually disintegrate on their own. However, if a kidney stone travels down the ureter, it could cause a blockage and lead to swelling of the kidney.

Pain in the flank is experienced when the pressure of the urine from the kidney pushes into the ureter and the stone. The pain can range from moderate to severe, and usually disappears once the kidney stone moves into the bladder. Once the stone reaches the bladder, it can disintegrate into smaller stones that pass out of the body with urine. Other symptoms associated with kidney stones include vomiting, nausea and the presence of blood in urine.

Doctors generally prescribe pain medication and advise the patient to wait for the kidney stone to make its way into the bladder on its own, especially if the symptoms are not too severe. If you do not want to take medication, try some home remedies to get rid of painful kidney stones.

Home Remedies

  • The best way to eliminate kidney stones is by promoting urination. Drinking herbal teas helps because these are natural diuretics. Try teas made from stinging nettle leaf or hydrangea. Nettle leaves flush out bacteria while maintaining electrolyte balance in the urine. Hydrangea has been used over centuries to treat kidney and bladder problems. Drink two or three cups of stinging nettle leaf or hydrangea tea daily to treat kidney stones and prevent them from forming again.

  • Studies show that cherries are beneficial for patients with uric acid kidney stones. Cherries have anti-inflammatory properties that reduce uric acid levels in the body.

  • Drink a mixture of extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice to combat kidney stones. The acidity of lemon juice and the lubricating properties of olive oil break down kidney stones, helping them pass through the urinary tract easier and faster.

  • Cleanse your kidneys by eating watermelons. Watermelons have high water content and are natural diuretics. Eating watermelons increases the amount and frequency of urination and can speed up the passage of kidney stones through the urinary system. Diabetics should avoid watermelon as the fruit is high in natural sugars. Other fruits and vegetables that promote cleansing of the kidneys are radish, cucumber, cranberries and celery.

  • Drink plenty of water. Water is probably the best natural remedy for eliminating painful kidney stones. Instead of drinking the usual eight to 10 cups of water, increase your daily intake to 14 cups or more. This would allow you to pass about two to three quarts of water throughout the day, thereby helping the stones pass quicker.
