Home Remedies for Cough
Coughs occur for a variety of reasons. Some coughs are caused by viral infections like the common cold or bronchitis. Other coughs are caused by allergies and occasionally by bacterial infections.
If you are suffering from an unexplained cough, consult your doctor for a diagnosis. Know what you are dealing with before your start looking for home remedies for cough. Prescription and over-the-counter medications for cough should be avoided unless strongly recommended by your physician. This is because coughing helps expel mucous and foreign matter from the lungs.
Home Remedies
- Licorice root tea is a great remedy for coughing. It acts as an expectorant, while moisturizing and soothing the throat. Do not use licorice tea if you have hypertension, are pregnant, or are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications. Licorice root could interact with some medicines. Check with your doctor first to verify that this herb is safe for you. If so, flavor your licorice root tea with raw honey.
- Raw honey is another great remedy. Take it by the tablespoon or use it in hot tea or water. Combine one tablespoon of honey with one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a generous sprinkle of cayenne peppers to moisturize and open up the passages while improving the body's alkalinity level. Either drink this quickly like a shot or mix with water and consume slowly.
- One of the most pleasurable home remedies for cough is chocolate. Before you get too excited, remember that chocolates are very high in sugar. If you want the positive effects without the extra sugar go for chocolate that is at least 70 percent pure dark cocoa. This type of chocolate is loaded with antioxidants. Its theobromine content is believed to have cough-suppressant qualities.
- Another simple way to quell coughing is by staying hydrated. Drink plenty of healthy fluids. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can dehydrate the body. Water and decaffeinated green tea (with honey, of course) are good beverage choices.
