Home Remedies for Colic
Colic is a common problem among infants, a problem that requires immediate attention. Infants with colic relentlessly howl and cry for much longer than usual.
This problem may affect 20 to 30 percent of infants, and can be very frustrating for parents who are unaware of causes and remedies for the condition. The symptoms generally continue for the first two to three months and gradually disappear.
There are several ways of treating colic at home. Let us explore some of the remedies.
Home Remedies
- Gas problems frequently cause colic. Change the infant's position and s/he might feel more comfortable. Place the baby on your lap, in a swing and so on.
- Show the baby some action -- whether by playing a catchy song, turning on the car engine, letting the tap drip water or making animal noises. This usually works.
- If your baby is already drinking from a bottle, ensure that s/he does not suck in air. Studies show that babies who are dependant on formula milk are more prone to colic.
- Feed your baby two to three teaspoons of chamomile tea. Mint tea, whether fed with a spoon or a bottle, can also soothe the baby.
- Gripe water is a wonderful remedy for colic. It is made of chamomile, ginger, fennel, ginger and peppermint, among others ingredients.
- Olive oil is an effective remedy. Apply warm olive oil on the baby's belly in circular manner to ward off the gas (if any) and sooth him. Give him a gentle hand or leg massage to relieve gas and pain.
- Holding the colicky infant close to your heart often soothes them. Hearing your heartbeat could make the baby more comfortable. Swinging the baby in your arms and showering him/her with lots of love often helps reduce colic.
