Effective Home Remedies for Ringworm
Ringworm affects humans and animals alike. A highly infectious skin ailment, it can easily be contracted through direct contact with an infected person or animal, or an infected object, area or surface. Interestingly, ringworm is not caused by a worm, but by a fungus named dermatophytes. Extremely itchy, round, raised red patches of skin characterize the infection, so there is no mistaking it.
As with other skin infections, sufferers should avoid scratching the infected areas to avoid transferring the fungi to other parts of the body or to family members through nails and fingers.
Avoid sharing personal items like, clothes, towels, toothbrushes, combs and shoes with others. These could all be carriers of the infection.
Many anti-fungal creams and medications are available over-the-counter for treating ringworm. However, they may not all be equally effective for everyone. If you have been grappling unsuccessfully with this unsightly and frustrating infection, here are some easy home remedies endorsed by former sufferers.
[Note: Most of these remedies must be used regularly (if possible, several times a day) over at least a month for visible results.]
- Fresh Papaya: Apply fresh papaya over the infected area. Let it dry, and then wash off.
- Turmeric Extract: Crush turmeric to extract its juice and apply over the infected area.
- Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is believed to be very effective against ringworm.
- Bleach: Dilute one part bleach in six parts water. Apply on the infected area with a Q-tip.
- Vinegar: Apply regular kitchen vinegar on the infection. Some suggest using a penny dipped in vinegar for application. Apparently, the copper and vinegar combination is an effective fungus-killer.
- Sulfur: Sulfur is known for its anti-fungal properties. Use diluted lime sulfur -- one part to 16/ 32 parts of water. Be careful, for this solution can cause stains.
- Nail Polish: Some believe that nail paint "suffocates" the fungi. Apply nail paint (any color) over the infected area and let it dry. Then peel it off or wash with soap.
- Epsom Salt Solution: Apply Epsom salt solution over the infected areas at least once a day.
- Sea Salt: A Canadian man disclosed the effectiveness of sea salt in killing ringworm. Rub a watery paste of sea salt directly on the infection at least twice a day.
These are a few home remedies that people who have suffered from ringworm have recommended. There is no certainty or assurance regarding the effectiveness of these methods. However, there is no harm in trying natural remedies.
If you develop any rash or irritation, discontinue the treatment immediately. It is advisable to consult your doctor before trying any home remedy.
