Alternative Catarrh Remedies That You Can Try

Catarrh is the inflammation of the mucus membranes in the sinuses and airways, which usually causes excessive mucus secretions and sinus blockage.

Catarrh can be brought about by an underlying illness such as a cold, the flu or other viral infections. It may also be caused by a bacterial infection or an allergy, particularly hay fever. Although catarrh is commonly associated with nasal discharge, the condition can occur elsewhere in the respiratory tract, especially when there is inflammation of the airways.

Like viral infections, catarrh usually goes away on its own, without your having to take any medication. If the symptoms become bothersome, try some alternative remedies to relieve the discomfort and treat the condition.

Home Remedies

  • Among the most popular and effective alternative catarrh remedies is taking black seed oil supplements. Black seed oil supplements clear the airways and stop excessive mucus production. This is because black seed oil has been studied to have anti-inflammatory, antihistamine and bronchial-dilating properties. Take a capsule twice a day and your catarrh should improve within a few days.

  • Eucalyptus also provides relief from the symptoms of catarrh. Place a few drops of eucalyptus oil in a bowl of boiling water. Position your face over the bowl and drape a towel over your head to create a small confined space between the bowl and your face, allowing you to inhale the eucalyptus steam. This is great for clearing up the nasal passages. Just make sure that the steam is not too hot. You would not want to scald your skin.

  • Some herbalists recommend placing a garlic clove on the sides of the mouth, between the cheek and teeth, as soon as cold symptoms are experienced. They claim that this could prevent catarrh. This is because garlic has antiviral properties that fight the cold and resulting catarrh. This is beneficial for people who usually contract catarrh during a cold.

  • You can also try using saline solution or mixing sea salt with water to drop into your nose. Saline solution is effective in hydrating the nasal passages. It can flush out excess mucus and clear the nasal cavities.

  • Studies reveal that thyme helps ease catarrh symptoms. Thyme massage oil can be applied on the chest, to break up the mucus and relieve inflammation.
