Alternative Remedies for Treating Candida
Candida or candidiasis is a type of fungal infection that is mainly caused by the fungus candida albicans. This fungus is naturally present in some parts of the body including the mouth, throat, genitals and intestinal tracts. Like the many naturally occurring bacteria in the body, this fungus is generally harmless.
However, when it multiplies due to an illness, a medical condition or the use of some medications, overgrowth could cause an infection. It could lead to a variety of symptoms, depending on the location of the infection. Some symptoms of candida or yeast infection include fatigue, lethargy, persistent coughing, sore throat, diarrhea, heartburn, muscle pain, vaginitis and bladder problems.
Although there are medications and prescription drugs for treating candida, many individuals prefer alternative remedies. Some alternative remedies have proven quite effective. We have listed out a few in this article.
Home Remedies
- A common candida remedy involves taking supplements or products that contain acidophilus or bifidus. Acidophilus is a type of beneficial bacteria or probiotic that controls the growth of candida by increasing acidity in the intestinal tract and producing hydrogen peroxide, a substance that kills candida. Supplements and pills that contain acidophilus and other probiotics are available at health food stores. You could also try eating foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, kombucha and other fermented food products that are rich in acidophilus.
- For vaginal yeast infections, dip a tampon in yoghurt and place this in the vagina for an hour or two. The acidophilus in yogurt helps kill the fungal growth.
- Take a tablespoon of omega-3 oil or flax seed oil to speed up healing and prevent the candida fungus from destroying healthy cells. Omega-3 oil and flax seed oil also boost the body's immune system, thereby preventing further infections and complications.
- Another good remedy for a vaginal candida infection is to make an herbal douche. First, simmer a tablespoon of goldenseal and a tablespoon of myrrh in three quarts of warm water. Then strain the mixture and let it cool. Use like a regular douche.
- Take two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or drink a tonic of warm water with a teaspoon each of honey and apple cider vinegar. Take either of these remedies with each meal to treat candida. Apple cider vinegar helps maintain proper pH balance in the body. This controls the growth of fungal infections. Use apple cider vinegar in regular meals like salad dressings or meat marinades to prevent the onset of candida.
- Garlic is believed to be a cure for candida, especially if the infection is in the early stages. Peel a garlic clove and place inside the vagina. Leave the clove inside overnight. Garlic's antifungal properties should kill the infection-causing yeast. You could also take garlic supplements. These are readily available at nutritional supplement stores. Take supplements twice a day to relieve symptoms.
A candida yeast infection can be easily cured through these alternative candida remedies, particularly in the early stages. Contact your physician or healthcare provider if your symptoms get worse or do not reduce.
