Effective Home Remedies for Treating Anxiety

We all experience anxiety from time to time. It could be triggered by various factors such as illness, stress, personality type and even genetics.

The symptoms of anxiety include increased heart rate, sweating, dizziness, irritability, heart palpitations, nausea, sleep problems, diarrhea, constipation, muscle tension and the inability to focus or concentrate. Depending on the cause of your anxiety, these symptoms could be either short-lived or prolonged.

Anxiety is usually a temporary condition that dissipates on its own when its cause goes away. However, sometimes the symptoms of anxiety do not disappear. This could lead to more serious disorders like panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, which could interfere with your daily routine.

If managed or controlled right away, anxiety can be treated easily. You can even treat the symptoms without immediately resorting to medication. Many home remedies can help calm your body and mind.

Home Remedies

  • Blend some raw almonds and mix into a cup of warm milk. Add a little ground ginger and nutmeg to the mixture, and take before bedtime. It will relax your mind and body as you go to bed.

  • Massage some warm oil onto your scalp and body. You could use sesame oil, coconut oil or sunflower oil. After applying the oil, use a small rolling pin or a massage ball to eliminate muscle tension and knots.

  • A warm bath is one of the best ways to relax the body. Add some baking soda and ginger to warm bath water and soak in the tub for 15 minutes. This can reduce stress levels and eliminate anxiety-related insomnia, especially after a long and stressful day.

  • Studies show that some teas reduce stress and anxiety. These include chamomile, rosemary, lavender and orange blossom.

  • Aromatherapy or the use of aromatic essential oils also helps calm the mind and spirit. Good choices are lavender, bergamot, chamomile, cinnamon, lemon and ylang ylang.

  • If you regularly experience increased heart rate due to anxiety or stress, drink a mixture of fresh orange juice with a pinch of nutmeg and some honey.

  • Regular exercise can do wonders for reducing anxiety. Exercise increases the production of a hormone called serotonin, which could uplift your mood and promote a sense of calm.

  • Yoga, tai chi and other meditative exercises can also help reduce anxiety, especially when combined with deep breathing techniques, as they entail exertion of the body while requiring you to focus on your breathing. This soothes the body and calms the mind.

  • Increase your intake of bananas, onions and other fruits and vegetables that contain high levels of folic acid and potassium to reduce symptoms of anxiety. Deficiency of these nutrients makes individuals more susceptible to stress.

  • Going on a vacation or distracting yourself with a relaxing hobby such as knitting or reading could also help. Being occupied in a hobby or activity will take your mind off stressful thoughts.
Try these home remedies if you are looking to reduce stress and anxiety. They are very effective, especially in cases of mild anxiety. Consult your physician if your symptoms are getting worse. You may already have a more serious anxiety disorder that requires the use of prescription medications.
