What Are the Benefits of Tea

Tea is decidedly the world's favorite beverage. Originally cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, tea is now widely produced across Britain and America as well.

There are seven distinct classifications of tea based on production and processing techniques. These are black, white, yellow, green, Oolong and post-fermented tea.

Tea is said to have many health benefits. It is commonly known as Mother Nature's "wonder drug." In traditional Indian, Chinese and Japanese cultures, tea has always been appreciated for its medicinal value. Among other things, tea is rich in an antioxidant called polyphenol.

Tea is known to stimulate the immune system and lower cholesterol levels. It contains much less caffeine than coffee. Tea is rich in antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. It is said to delay aging, fight high blood pressure and assist in basic digestion. Green tea has become a favorite among weight-watchers around the world because it is believed to aid weight loss.

Tea is the most widely consumed liquid after water. The beverage is consumed in almost every corner of the world. Tea is generally prepared by allowing the dried tea leaves to soak in hot water. The tealeaves are then strained to reveal a clear, dark, honey-colored liquid. This liquid can be consumed as is or served with milk or cream and sugar.

Tea is taken differently in different cultures. While the British have tea with "a drop of milk," Indians are known for their spicy "masala chai." The Japanese tea ceremony is a widely romanticized ritual wherein tea is served in an elaborate service. The affluent classes traditionally practice the ceremony.

Tea is also flavored with fruits, nuts, spices, herbs and flowers ranging from apricot, apple, banana and berries to almonds, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, lemon, hibiscus and mango. The list is never-ending.

Caution

Most doctors recommend drinking tea in moderation. Excessive tea consumption can lead to harmful side effects. Tea contains caffeine, an addictive drug that harms the central nervous system. It is also known to promote kidney disorders in extreme cases. Consult your dietitian to determine the ideal amount of regular tea consumption.
