VEGETABLE & FRUITS TIPS

1) Buy Local
Vegetables and fruits in the supermarket often seem fresh and hardy. They however could not match local grown produce in term of flavor and freshness. Careless storage and display may reduce the nutrients of produce that are sold in the supermarket. If there’s a store selling locally produced fruits and vegetables, take the advantage.

2) Frozen is better than canned
When vegetables are canned, they undergo a heating process that destroys some vitamins. Large amount of preservatives (like sodium) may also get into the can. The canned vegetables will also have less natural flavor than fresher ones. Canned fruits are also packed with heavy syrup, something that could double the calorie.

3) Wash carefully
Thorough washing could get rid of toxic residues used. Do not eat vegetables or fruits off the shelves. You will be eating the pesticides along with the produce. One study shows that washing reduced the amount of pesticide residue by half.

4) Or peel
Some fruits and vegetables are heavily waxed to keep them looking fresh and bright. These wax unfortunately will also seal the pesticides and fungicides used to kill insects from damaging these crops. Washing and scrubbing may help. But the best way is to peel the skin (which sadly is the part richest in fiber). For your information, cucumbers and tomatoes are among the most heavily waxed vegetables.

5) Try organic
Organic simply means that the food has been grown without chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The price will normally be higher but these foods are safer.

6) Check the guide here
These are the list of fruits and vegetables that we eat everyday according to well .. how healthy they are? Are they as sick as some of us or are they healthy food to eat. These list are based on analysis of USDA and FDA data (1992-2001) by the Environmental Working Group2.

So, remember - peel your apple !
