Tomatoes are considered one of the most nutritious food items in the world. Apart being a succulent and tangy vegetable (and sometimes referred to as a fruit), tomatoes help fight several diseases. Over 10,000 types of tomatoes are available across the globe.

Tomatoes are exceptionally rich in Vitamin C and also have high fiber content. The vegetable contains substantial Vitamin A, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin K, and almost all the essential minerals.

Tomato as a Cancer-Reducing Agent

Recent studies have revealed that sufficient intake of tomatoes reduces the risk of different cancers. This is because tomatoes contain lycopene, an effective antioxidant. Lycopene neutralizes harmful free radicals, thereby destroying cancerous cells.

Breast cancer, colon cancer, prostrate cancer, and cancers of the mouth, lungs, pancreas and stomach can be prevented by adequate intake of tomatoes.

Benefits of Tomatoes

Tomato revitalizes the skin and is a great blood purifier. The presence of potassium and niacin helps reduce blood cholesterol, thereby aiding in the prevention of coronary heart disease.

The Vitamin K content helps prevent hemorrhages and strengthens bones. The presence of riboflavin cures migraine headaches.

Lycopene, the pigment that gives tomatoes their red color, has strong antioxidant properties. It regulates blood pressure, prevents muscle disintegration and reduces disorders related to old age.

How to Eat Tomatoes

Tomatoes can be eaten raw or in the form of juices, soups and sauces. It is a key ingredient in salads. According to recent research, cooked tomatoes have greater nutritional value than raw ones. In this sense, it is different from other fruits and vegetables that lose nutrients when cooked. Cooked tomatoes are healthier because they release more lycopene, thereby increasing the nutrient value of a dish.

Caution

Do not consume tomatoes if you are allergic to Vitamin C. Excessive intake of tomatoes results in kidney and bladder stones as well as acidity.

Red tomatoes are high in lycopene and beta-carotene. Pick red tomatoes for best results. Tomatoes should not be stored in the refrigerator because cold temperature lessens its nutritive values.
