Oranges: A Treat That Is Both Yummy and Healthy

The orange is a great nutritional fruit. It has a textured skin and pulpy flesh. In color, it is as orange as its name. The skin ranges from extremely thick to rather thin. Typically, oranges are anywhere from two to four inches in diameter.

Oranges are a rich source of Vitamin C, which helps detoxify the body. Vitamin C not only cleanses the body, it also wards off osteoporosis. Oranges are a major source of fiber.

Oranges play a big role in the prevention of colon cancer. The fruit contains numerous anti-cancer components. It can also help fight breast and lung cancer. This is because oranges contain citrus limonoid, an extremely effective anti-cancer compound.

There are many ways of consuming oranges. They can be taken cold or warm, cooked or raw. Include them in a main course or snack on them between meals. Orange juice is easily extracted and is a tasty treat for everyone. You could freeze the juice into yummy popsicles.

A single orange has about 50 mg of Vitamin C, approximately two-thirds our daily nutritional requirement. A single glass of freshly squeezed orange juice is high in calcium. Orange juice is also rich in thiamin, folic acid and potassium.

To squeeze the most juice out of an orange, avoid refrigerating the fruit. You could even try microwaving oranges to get more juice out of them. Freshly squeezed orange juice can be kept refrigerated for about seven to 10 days.

When you go shopping, pick oranges that have gleaming skin with no wrinkles or blemishes. An orange that feels heavy in your hand will hold plenty of juice. A small navel indicates more pulp. A large navel means that the oranges are too ripe; they will not be as beneficial. Keep oranges in a cool, dry place to preserve their freshness.
