Olive Oil: Benefits for the Skin

Olive oil is derived from the olive tree, a tree that is mainly cultivated in the Mediterranean region.

Olive oil is available in a wide range of retail grades, depending on how they have been produced. The grade determines their acidity, taste and use. Some retail grades of olive oil include extra-virgin, virgin, pure, olive-pomace, lampante and refined.

Producing Olive Oil

The olive fruits are first harvested and then quickly transported to an olive mill. The olives must be transported immediately to ensure that acidity levels do not rise, as this could affect the flavor. The olives are then cleaned and run through a mill that turns them into paste. This olive paste is subjected to the process of malaxation, or slow mixing of the paste. Thereafter, the paste is pressurized in order to extract the liquid oil and water. Finally, the olive oil is separated from the water.

Benefits and Uses of Olive Oil

Olive oil is widely used in cooking and in preparing various dishes and salads. It also offers several health benefits for the skin. Olive oil is high in antioxidants and Vitamin E, both of which promote skin health. Here are some of the skin benefits of olive oil.
