Olive Oil Benefit

Olive oil is oil obtained from the olive tree. The tree is native to the Mediterranean region, but ever-popular olive oil is now manufactured across the world in northern Africa, south Europe, Greece, Australia, Spain and North America. There are different grades of commercially-produced olive oil, namely, virgin, extra-virgin (refined) and Pomace olive oil.

Olive oil is rich in antioxidants, mainly Vitamin E. This makes the oil extremely beneficial for skin and hair. It is also said to have anti-aging qualities.

Olive oil reduces oxidation of cholesterol and is low in LDL (bad cholesterol) while being high on HDL (good cholesterol). This makes it helpful in preventing coronary heart diseases and blood pressure.

Olive oil is more easily absorbed than vegetable, coconut or mustard oils. Hence, it is the most recommended oil for weight watchers. Substituting other types of fat with olive oil makes dishes healthier and friendlier to the heart.

Olive oil is commonly used in cooking around the world. Vinaigrette made with extra virgin olive oil is the most favored salad dressing, for it has a light flavor and can be easily consumed raw. Olive oil can also be used for making dips with fried garlic, pepper, vinegar and aromatic herbs. When cooked in olive oil, delicate meats like fish and poultry give off a beautiful and light flavor. Even bakers are now substituting other forms of fat with olive oil because of its health benefits.

Olive oil is also used externally in and as beauty products. Massaging your hair with olive oil is beneficial for dry and stressed hair. Many beauty experts recommend massaging your mane with olive oil and steaming it before a shampoo to get healthy, glossy and manageable hair. Olive oil can also be used as a moisturizer for your skin. Massaging olive oil on dry and rough skin before a shower reduces dryness and makes skin supple.

Olive oil is healthy but take care while cooking with it. Heating olive oil beyond the smoking point leads to changes in its chemical composition. This generates oxygen radicals known to encourage cancerous growths. It is recommended that you consult a dietician or doctor to determine the suitable quantity of olive oil for daily consumption.
