Mangosteen Benefit

Garcinia mangostana is the scientific name of the purple mangosteen. This tropical evergreen tree originated in Indonesia and the Sunda Islands in Southeast Asia. The exotic fruit has had its share of celebrity endorsements, the most famous being Queen Victoria, who offered a reward of 100 pounds for bringing her the fruit.

Mangosteen contains compounds that have antioxidant, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties; and that is just the beginning! I listed out some of its benefits. The compounds in mangosteen prevent or fight the following conditions:
  • Allergies
  • Anxiety
  • Alzheimer's
  • Arthritis
  • Depression
  • Diarrea
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Glaucoma
  • Inflammation
  • Obesity
  • Pain
  • Parkinsonism
  • Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Neuralgia (nerve pain)
  • Skin disease
  • Vertigo (dizziness)
  • Ulcer.
Mangosteen contains a powerful life-enhancing antioxidant called xanthone. Xanthones are now being studied extensively for their incredible health advantages and near-miraculous medicinal properties. The anti-ageing properties of the fruit delay the onset of natural ageing and age-related diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart diseases.

The recommended form of consumption is to eat the segments within the shell. Cut around the hard outer skin with a small, sharp or serrated knife and pry open to reach the delicious white interior. You may scoop out the flesh with a spoon or fork and discard the pits. If you are fortunate enough to enjoy the farm fresh fruit, it is advisable to use a knife; otherwise the bitter ring could mix with the flesh and ruin the taste.

Many products claiming to be mangosteen derivatives have hit supermarket shelves recently. However, the proprietary mangosteen juices available in the market lose most nutrients during the pasteurization process to improve shelf life. Some additives, especially sodium benzoate, are known to chemically react with the juice and form a harmful compound named benzene. Proprietary packed products may not have all the benefits of the natural form.

Although the benefits of mangosteen are beyond doubt, it is advisable to consult your healthcare professional to prevent adverse reactions to the fruit.
