The Health Benefits of Mangosteen
The mangosteen fruit grows on tropical evergreen trees of the same name. These trees are said to have originated in the Moluccas of Indonesia and the Sunda Islands. Today, mangosteen trees are grown in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and southern India.
The fruit is round and about the size of a tennis ball. The inedible rind is thick and takes on a deep reddish color when ripe. This rind has to be crushed or pinched open in order to eat the flesh. The flesh itself is fragrant and divided into different-sized wedges. It also has a unique and delicate taste that is sweet, slightly tangy and citrusy. Some say that it tastes similar to peach, strawberry and vanilla ice cream.
Mangosteen can be eaten fresh and raw or as a juice. This delicious fruit contains numerous nutrients including xanthones, sterols, and other antioxidants and phytonutrients that provide several health benefits.
