Why Is Grapefruit So Popular?

Grapefruits are among the more popular citrus fruits because they taste delicious and refreshing.

This fruit is often large with either pink or pale yellow flesh. In chemical composition, it is similar to oranges, lemons and limes. It is often used in combination with other fruits and vegetables as a table salad.

Seedless grapefruits are usually much sweeter and contain more calcium and sugar than grapefruits with seeds. The latter are often seasoned with sugar before serving.

Grapefruit consumption provides many health benefits. For instance, grapefruit increases alkaline levels when its citric acid content oxidizes in the body. This is interesting because the fruit's acidic taste suggests the opposite. The body reacts to the citric acid by producing additional alkaline fluid to neutralize it. Hence, grapefruit is excellent for improving gastric digestion.

Another excellent benefit of grapefruit is that it provides relief from constipation by forcing bowel movement when the pulp is eaten whole. Even if you are not constipated, eating grapefruit will prevent future constipation while cleaning out the intestines and protecting against diseases of the digestive tract, like enteritis and dysentery.

Grapefruit juice is one of the most popular natural cures for influenza because it contains maringin, a substance that reduces acidity levels in the body. The body's acidity levels tend to increase during illness. Maringin is also known to clean out the digestive tract and improve overall health.

Grapefruits also contain a natural substance called quinine. Liquid quinine is often used to treat fever and malaria. This is done by boiling part of the grapefruit and straining the pulp. It helps reduce heat in the body and quench thirst almost immediately.

However, too much grapefruit juice is potentially dangerous. Do not diet solely on grapefruit juice. Instead, limit your consumption to a few glasses a day; this will supply you with a good dose of vitamins and nutrients.
