The Medicinal Properties of Cucumbers

Although many believe that the health benefits of cucumbers were first discovered in the 18th century, cucumbers have been used for medicinal purposes since the ancient Greek and Roman eras.

This popular salad ingredient is known for its cooling ability. It is also used as an extract in lotions.

When consumed regularly, cucumbers provide many health benefits. Cucumber juice is particularly beneficial as it refuels the body with essential fluids and acts as a diuretic, which is good for the urinary tract and the bladder. Cucumber juice is also known to diminish eczema and relieve at least some of the pain and symptoms of gout and arthritis. Regular consumption of cucumbers can also increase and maintain the health of your liver, pancreas and kidneys.

You can treat indigestion by eating cucumbers. This is because the cucumbers contain erepsin, a compound that promotes low stomach acid and better digestion while providing relief from heartburn, gastritis, and sometimes, even ulcers.

Cucumber juice relieves pain or discomfort in the lungs, chest and stomach, especially when combined with carrot juice. The combination of the two nutrient-rich juices eliminates any excess uric acid in the body. This subsequently provides at least temporary relief from rheumatic conditions.

Cucumbers are excellent for preventing high blood pressure and heart disease. It is also effective against pyorrhea, a gum disease that affects the roots of the teeth. Consuming cucumbers or cucumber juice prevents degeneration of the bone and tissue surrounding the teeth.

The beauty industry recognizes the cleansing, cooling and softening properties of cucumber. For example, the minerals found in cucumber prevent nails from splitting. They are also active in cleaning the body of toxins and other waste. A wide range of cosmetics and natural cures include cucumber extract as an ingredient. Cucumber is much favored by those who prefer natural home remedies.
