Virgin coconut oil is a type of vegetable oil. It was first produced commercially in Southeast Asia back in the 19th century. Today, many countries around the globe are exporting virgin coconut oil for a variety of purposes.

Virgin coconut oil is made from the flesh or meat of fresh coconuts. Several methods can be used to extract the oil. There is the wet-milling method, where fresh coconut meat is compressed to get coconut milk. This liquid is then separated into coconut oil and coconut water. The process of separating the coconut oil and coconut water can be done through either centrifuge (subjecting the coconut milk to temperature extremes), fermentation, or by spinning the liquids until they separate.

The results of the wet-milling method can also be achieved through a process called DME or direct micro-expelling, where the oil is cold-pressed from the fresh meat within one hour of cracking open the coconut. The DME method is presently considered the best way to extract virgin coconut oil. This oil remains unrefined, raw, free from impurities and unhydrogenated.

Virgin coconut oil has many uses. It can be a healthy alternative to regular cooking oil, particularly in frying. It also adds a distinct flavor to south Asian curries and many savory dishes. Hydrogenated coconut oil is found in processed foods like coffee creamers and snack cakes. It can also be applied or consumed for its health benefits and medicinal properties. Here are some benefits of virgin coconut oil.

Benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil

  • Many clinical studies show the antiviral and antimicrobial properties of virgin coconut oil. It is now being used to treat AIDS patients.

  • There is a misconception that virgin coconut oil is bad for health because of its saturated fat content. However, it is frequently used to prevent cardiovascular problems such as stroke and heart disease. This is because the saturated fat in coconut oil is different from the "bad" saturated fat found in meat and some vegetables. The fat in coconut oil is similar to the fat found in breast milk, which has been proven to improve digestion and boost immunity.

  • Studies show that virgin coconut oil helps in weight loss. This is because the fatty acids in coconut oil do not remain in the bloodstream unlike other types of oils and fats. Instead, they go directly to the liver and are immediately converted into energy that the body can use. It is not stored as body fat.
The recommended dosage for using virgin coconut oil for therapeutic purposes is three or four tablespoons daily.

When buying virgin coconut oil, look for a product that is unrefined, unfermented, un-deodorized, unbleached, non-hydrogenated and free from chemicals to ensure that you enjoy all its health benefits.
